“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” — Matthew 24:7-8
As best as I can remember it was 11:45pm, 28 years ago. My wife had been a little uneasy at supper 5 hours earlier. We had settled in for what I expected to be a good night’s sleep. Then there was a tap on my shoulder. Shirlon said, “I think I’m having a contraction.” I suddenly felt as though pure adrenalin was flooding my veins. The baby was on the way!
What I did not understand at the time was that this was just the beginning of a long process. Birth pains were a sign that a baby was on the way but not that she would come immediately. It was 4:00pm the next afternoon before we gazed on the beautiful face of our little Bethany.
The time in between the first pain and the first glance was filled with anxiety, pain and drugs. Shirlon had a pretty hard time, too. The intensity of the process increased with each passing moment. The occurrences of the birth pains were erratic at first, but as the time proceeded, they became regular, longer and closer together.
I believe that our world is experiencing birth pains. Jesus taught his disciples in Matthew 24 that the end times would bring on events and catastrophes curiously similar to the birth process. National devastation and natural disaster would be the first indicators that a Savior is coming!
This morning I was awakened to the heartbreaking headline that Japan had just experienced a 8.9 magnitude earthquake. This was followed shortly by a tsunami wave that basically flattened the shoreline of northern Japan. Luke’s gospel records this description: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea” (Luke 21:25).
The natural, social, moral and economic upheavals have begun in our world. Many will say that there have been these occurrences throughout history. In some degree that is true, but we have never seen all of these upheavals taking place at the same time and with such rapidity! The final birth process has begun.
If my interpretation of current events is accurate, there are two questions that must be answered personally by everyone who is reading this blog. Question 1: If we are experiencing the birth pains of the end times, have I made preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ? Question 2: If Jesus is coming soon, what should I be doing and saying to assure that my loved ones, friends, and acquaintances are prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ?
If you are not ready to meet Christ, turn from your sin to God and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved from the wrath that is coming. If you are a Christian, you need to be sharing the truth of what is coming with everyone you come in contact with.
