“Then they spoke against God; they said, ‘Can God prepare a table in the ilderness?’” — Psalm 78:19
The children of Israel were becoming increasingly restless. They were surrounded by the sands of a desert; food was in short supply. Water was at a premium. Outspoken condemnation of Moses was being heard everywhere. God was dealing with an obstinate crowd!
Long afterward, David, describing the scene, said, “Then they spoke against God; they said, Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?” It has often been claimed that man’s extremity is God’s opportunity; but, the shame is that when most men encounter problems, they only invite God to intervene when other possibilities have been exhausted. Unfortunately, the Lord is denied the privilege of helping His children until it is almost impossible to do anything.
History proves that even when men confused the issue, the grace of God was sufficient to do the impossible. Throughout the wilderness experiences, God sent manna from Heaven and birds to sustain His hungry people. He met their every need, but unfortunately thankfulness was ruined by ingratitude. Complaints and criticisms warped their thinking and turned joy into sadness. Nevertheless, He did furnish a table in the wilderness and still does for all who trust Him.
Israel’s sin was the root cause for all their wanderings and suffering in the wilderness. God’s sustaining power was the evidence of His love and concern for the people He had chosen. His undeserved favor was His way of laughing at their impossibilities.
The tragedy of our generation is that we are in the middle of another wilderness wandering and we don’t even recognize it. Our nation’s past prosperity and power have blinded us to the fact that we are in a desperate and deadly state. America is dying. The disease is sin.
Is there any hope for America? for the remnant of God’s people who remain faithful? Yes! I serve a God who majors on resurrections! He can take a dying man, racked with sin, and give him a new life! If He can do that for a man, He can do that for a nation. Nothing is impossible for Him!
It is time for us to turn from our own ways, our own strength and our own intellect. It is time for us to turn to the Lord. If we will humble ourselves, pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways, God will do the impossible and restore our generation to righteousness and blessing. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
If you are finding yourself with a spiritual hunger you cannot ignore, remember that God is able to furnish a table for you in your wilderness. When your situation seems hopeless and impossible, look up. God is laughing at your impossibilities. Set your gaze on Him… your answer is on the way.
