Where are We Investing?

“Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds; for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to all generations. When the grass disappears, the new growth is seen, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered in, the lambs will be clothing, and the goats will bring the price of a field, and there will be goats’ milk enough for your food, and sustenance for your maidens.”  —  Proverbs 27:23-27

Many are looking at our economy, wondering about the future and talking about their investments. Our culture waits with bated breath for the next major turn in the world of finance. Where is the certainty; the security we are looking for?

God’s investment plan is people. His focus…the reason He sent His Son was and is to “seek and to save that which is lost” (Matthew 18:11). Any focus away from what God has demonstrated as important, will ultimately lead to emptiness, frustration and despair.

The spiritual application for “flocks and herds” in our day is the people God has brought into our lives. We must invest in those who He has given us influence with. Our time, talents and treasures need to be focused with a laser-like bead on the hearts and lives of those around us.

I recently spoke to a man who has attained everything that the world would consider treasure and success. As he spoke to me, he told of a friend who had done the same. This friend was out walking with his wife and fell over dead. He had sacrificed many of the relationships in his life to gain what he possessed. Now he was gone.

My friend said to me, “I don’t want to end up like him. I’m changing my priorities. From now on, I am going to focus my energies on my relationship with the Lord and on those God has given me to love!”

The incredible promise of God is this: the right investments pay the greatest dividends. When we focus on the right things, we will be sustained through the hardest of times. The “flocks and herds” we invest in will one day provide for us. Unselfish investment in the lives of others will bring unselfish provision in our time of need!

Today, I choose to look for people who are in need. I choose to be aware, to care and to share the love of Christ will those I come in contact with. How about you?
