“The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, ‘Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.’ So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.” — Jeremiah 18:1-4
Jeremiah was a dramatic, object-lesson-preacher. He buried his clothes. He dug them up again. He said to his people, “Your faith is like these clothes: it was once pure, but now it is polluted. It was once magnificent, but now it is maggoty. Your faith is a farce, your prayers are a pretence, and your temple-worship is travesty.”
He preached and he pled for a heart set right with the Lord. His hearers, however, hardened their hearts, and kept on in their corruption. They broke his heart. Then the Lord told him to go to the potter’s shop and He would talk to him there. Jeremiah did as the Lord told him and recorded the object lesson of the potter and the clay.
Who is this potter? It is the Lord, and just as soon as you believe on Him in your heart and with your mouth tell others of your faith in Him, all the attributes of His presence and pleasure will permeate your life.
He is omniscient. He knows all about you, your individual condition and circumstances, your individual talents and traits, your individual weaknesses and wants.
He is omnipresent. Wherever you are, He’s right by your side; guarding you and giving you just what you need. Though separated from your family and friends on occasions, you are never separated from Him.
He is omnipotent. What His love wants as best for you, what His wisdom knows to be the best for you, His power can procure and produce for you and in you. There’s no limit to what His almightiness can do for you. No one can resist Him or restrain Him.
He is omni-existent. God always was and always will be. He will no more have an end than He had a beginning, and He’s ever the same. However unstable you and I may be, however fickle our friends may be; God doesn’t change. He never forgets, never fails, never falters, and never forfeits His Word!
He is love and His love is uninfluenced. He didn’t love us because we loved Him. His love is infinite. There’s a depth to His love that you cannot fathom; a height which you cannot scale; and a length and breadth which you cannot measure. His love is immutable. Despite our sins and shortcomings, He keeps on loving you and me!
“His love no end or measure knows,
No change can turn its course,
Eternally the same it flows
From one eternal source.”
These are the hands that shape those He saves!
