Overcoming the Devil’s Obstacles

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you.”  —  Deuteronomy 31:8

I once heard a story about the devil holding auction to sell the tools of his trade. When the prospective buyers assembled, they saw an array of implements: hatred, jealousy, deceit, pride–all at expensive prices. But there was one odd-looking tool at the auction site labeled “Not for sale.”

When one of the buyers asked the devil why this tool wasn’t for sale, he explained, “ I can spare my other tools, but I cannot spare this one. It is the most useful implement I have. It is called Discouragement, and I can use it to work my way into hearts that are otherwise inaccessible. When I get this tool into a man’s heart, the way is open for me to plant anything there.”

Life is a challenge that requires us to give of ourselves wholeheartedly. If we hold back, we can miss out on opportunities. If we focus on the negative, we can feel overwhelmed. If we think too long without taking action, we can lose heart and conclude that the task is too large.

But in this world filled with obstacles, God offers his presence. And if we remind ourselves daily that God is with us and that he filters everything that comes our way, we can overcome any tool the devil uses on us and move forward with courage.

On the path of life there are pitfalls that will discourage you if you focus on them and there are weary travelers who will discourage you if you listen to them. But Jesus is also on that path, and he will be with you, encouraging you every step of the way. God is bigger that the challenges you face in your life. We should praise Him for that!
