Thieves have stolen a cross in the Mojave Desert that honored the American war dead, less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the religious symbol to remain on federal land.
The ‘Mojave Cross’ memorial was erected on an outcrop known as Sunrise Rock in the Mojave National Preserve, in Calif. The 2.1-metre-high cross was stolen late Sunday or early Monday by thieves who cut the metal bolts that attached the symbol to a rock in the sprawling desert preserve, National Park Service spokeswoman Linda Slater said.
Authorities had no immediate motive for the theft but ideas range from scrap metal scavengers to people “with an interest in the case,” Slater said. A $25,000 US reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves, she said.
Veterans groups were outraged. “The American Legion expects whoever is responsible for this vile act to be brought to justice,” said Clarence Hill, the group’s national commander. “While the memorial has been attacked, the fight will continue to ensure that veterans memorials will remain sacrosanct.”
The Veterans of Foreign Wars first placed a cross on the rock in 1934 to honor the dead troops of the First World War. Slater said she did not know when the latest version was erected.
There have always been attempts to suppress the truth about God, His salvation and the price He was willing to pay for our redemption. I am appalled at the great insensitivity and lack of fear of God that was demonstrated in this act. It is a sign of things to come.
There is, however a greater injustice being perpetrated in the house of God. The cross is being hidden, yes even stolen, by those who profess to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Paul wrote of those who “suppress the truth by their wickedness.” When you can’t tell the people of God from the people of the world…the cross is missing! When the church winks and laughs at sin as though it is some kind of joke with no eternal consequences…the cross is stolen! When the lost consider Jesus Christ to be some myth because they see no evidence of His presence and power demonstrated in the lives of those who profess Him…the cross is gone!
Every act of disrespect to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ should be a wake-up call for God’s people to repent and return to unflinching loyalty and obedience. C’mon church, don’t you think its time that we ask the question, “Where is the Cross?”
