Jam Today!

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed upon Him. And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’”

                        — Luke 4:18-21

In the children’s story Alice in Wonderland, most are familiar with the edict of the White Queen – “Jam yesterday and jam tomorrow, but never jam today.”

We may smile at that, but many people go through life on that schedule. Something good may have happened yesterday; something good may happen tomorrow. But nothing good ever happens today!

So goes the whining.  For many, today seems to be an empty place between yesterday and tomorrow.

In the Scripture above, this was the first recorded word of Jesus’ ministry.  Notice the focus of His message – today!

The message of Jesus is for today.  The power of Jesus is for today.  The promises of Jesus are for today.  The joy of Jesus is obtainable today.  The ministry of Jesus is available, not only yesterday in history, and tomorrow in eternity but today in reality!

You and I don’t have to live in the past or long for the future – through Jesus we can have jam today! Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
